Frequently Asked Questions
Anyone who is motivated to get faster or more efficient. I’ve worked with swimmers of all levels from age 7 through 70. I’ve worked with athletes who were scared of swimming to professional triathletes and Division I swimmers. Everyone wishing to get better needs a technique coach.
The athlete should be able to swim a length of the pool. For young swimmers, I suggest the swimmer have the desire to learn how to swim faster. If the young swimmer is not yet interested in how to get faster with technique and they are enjoying learning, I would hold off until they are motivated to improving technique.
Before the Virtual Session
- Swimmer video records swim strokes to be reviewed. For best results, record all angles of swim (above the surface front and side, below the water front and side). But if you do not have an underwater capable camera, then be sure to get good video clips from the front and side, recorded on deck (not from stands).
- Swimmer schedules a session to review the pre-recorded video of your swim technique.
- Swimmer sends the video clip.
- We meet for Virtual Session.
In the Virtual Session
- The Swimmer will share their main goal(s).
- We will view the recorded video together over a zoom call.
- We will review the most important things the swimmer does well, and the 2-3 most important things to improve.
- I will share some example videos to demonstrate the goal technique and answer questions.
Every personal session is customized to the specific goals of the swimmer. There’s no one size fits all approach.
Each session contains a common approach to the session:
- Goal review
- Video recording
- Review of video and establishing 2-3 focus points of the stroke to improve
- Practice one focus at a time with specific instructions
- Review of the session with written notes
- Review of the session video (optional) clips of improved technique
Session length depends on the goal and the swimmer. Some swimmers set up weekly 30 minute sessions to get better a little at a time. Some swimmers don’t have the ability to come to multiple sessions so prefer a 90 minute session to start with and then followups every month or two when they feel they need feedback.
The average session is 60 minutes. The time will allow for review of one or two strokes with review and practice of 3-5 technique focuses.
Each swimmer is unique. Some swimmers come weekly to practice under the close eye of the camera. Repetition done right is the only way to improve long term. Some swimmers come once a season, and are able to incorporate feedback to go back to their workout and make the necessary changes.
